Fall Foliage Perennials

When we think of fall color, we almost always think about trees and shrubs. However, there are a number of great perennials who strut their stuff in a whole new way when the temperatures drop. Wild Geranium, also goes by the awful common name of “Bloody Cranesbill” (Geranium sanguineum) which clearly no one thought through the mental imagery when naming this lovely perennial.  It’s lovely with just hints of red foliage color during the growing season but it transforms in the Fall…

Garden ‘Whimsy’ Done Right!

I will just say right now that I hate the phrase ‘whimsy’ as, to me, it’s just a polite way of saying “tacky”.   That’s probably because of all the design styles for gardens, a ‘whimsical’ style using re-purposed elements is the HARDEST to get right.  It requires an amazing eye and a keen aesthetic that’s honestly hard to come by- even for those who excel at other design styles.  However, every now and then you happen upon a garden…

Plantation Shutter Planter Tutorial

Otherwise known as a ‘Plant’ation Privacy Screen. Like many of you, I saw the original idea for this project in Sunset Magazine, though I am sure the designer who created it was not the first to do this, she certainly did it up beautiful! The Sunset Magazine version featured a gorgeous project completed by San Francisco area floral designer, Baylor Chapman of LilaB Designs. The magazine gave a little information on how the shutters were constructed and it sounded pretty…

Coffee Table Planter

The 1st annual Gala Fundraiser event was held on Saturday night for Conservation Garden Park and it seems to have been quite a successful event.  I am rather relieved it’s over as I participated in several capacities and I’m plum wore out!  Through my ‘regular gig’, I helped plan and manage the event.  Through my design business, I donated several pieces of garden art, including a ‘coffee table planter’. The seed for the table was planted by Julie Rader of…

Utah House @ The Utah Botanical Center

If you’re anything like me, you’ve driven down I-15 through Kayesville you’ve probably seen the signs for the Utah Botanic Center. You’ve probably even thought about stopping by someday- and you’re probably on your way somewhere else and don’t have time to just drop in when you pass. I’m going to convince you with 7 pictures (and really that’s overkill- could do it in 3) why the garden merits a visit- even if you have to make special plans to…

Succulent Living Wreaths

I am very fortunate to work for an awesome garden where they let me explore all kinds of interesting planting ideas.  We have our very first fundraising gala event coming up in a few weeks and I’ve been hard at work creating some cool garden art pieces for the auction (which I’ll share in a future post).  I’ve been too busy DOING to be blogging but I hope there are still a few readers out there! The theme of our…

How to Successfully Design a Lawnless Landscape

It’s true that you can have a wonderful, lawn-free landscape BUT it also requires careful design in order to ensure you don’t end up with a cluttered, hot mess! Why is designing a lawnless landscape so challenging? Well, to understand that we must first understand why lawns are so appealing in the first place- beyond the obvious recreational reasons. In the above space which I designed for a client a few years back, the dry river bed serves as the…

Cherry Blossom Festival

I know this blog is about all things local but, occassionally, it’s fun to think past our borders- or even global.  I had the opportunity to vacation in Washington DC with 2 of my sisters at the beginning of April.  What an adventure! We were spouse and kid free for 6 whole days!  It was wonderful to have the chance to MISS our respective families. The trip boasted many wonderful floral opportunities, even though we were there so early in…
